Most of the time, I love sharing my tips and being asked for opinions. When someone asks ‘Where is the best bar in Herald Square for happy hour?’ (Reichenbach Hall) or ‘What’s your favorite place for margaritas in the LES?’ (Barrio Chino) I jump at the chance to share my opinions, even if I wasn’t being directly asked. So that’s an indirect apology to that family on the 3 train last night.

However, when it comes to hard-to-find specialists, I start feeling agita about sharing my secrets. I don’t like telling people what dentist I go to, because I love him and he’s mine. I had anxiety about writing this post, because finding a waxer and esthetician as amazing as Lena is HARD and if, as a result of this post, I can’t get an appointment one day, I’ll cry. That said, it’s a fantastic place and I swore an oath when joining Wanna Fork to help our readers navigate NYC like a pro, so it’s my obligation. Painful or not, here goes.

Ladies and gentleman, this is Lena of Lena Skincare. She is a certified cosmetologist and esthetician and genuinely a talented and kind person. I found Lena 4 years ago, while working midtown and in need of a last minute brazilian bikini wax. I yelped it and came across a dozen reviews of a random hair salon on 34th St – only none of the reviews were about the hair cuts and styles, it was all about Lena. Everyone skipped right over any actual hair styling reviews and sang her praises as an amazing waxer and esthetician. I made an appointment for that day, and was blown away – the reviews didn’t let me down. At the time, I had only just started getting waxed, so it still brought me to tears when I went in the room. However, Lena is a pro and her sweet nature and Russian confidence put me at ease. She makes jokes and tells you how great you are doing, even when you yelp or squirm around. She even offers treats like chocolate and wine to her customers while they await their torture, all for only $30.

Yes, that’s right.

For $30, you get a clean, safe, thorough wax by a pro, AND a glass of wine. She does deals all the time, too. Right now, for instance, you can get a full leg and bikini for $45. There is no better deal in this town. She also lets you punch a rewards card, so occasionally you get an additional $5 off your wax service.

As I said earlier, Lena is also a great esthetician .Facials are very beneficial to your skin, and they are definitely not just a pampering luxury although it might seem that way. Everyone should have a facial spa treatment at least once every three months. Deep cleansing, balancing the skin’s PH, and exfoliating are all essential for a healthy skin, correcting and preventing premature aging and a number of skin issues. Lena offers all types of beauty services to her clients, including a variety of face and body facials, diamond microdermabrasian, and eyebrow shaping. I bought a back facial for my boyfriend, who was squirmish initially but really enjoyed it. I try to go for facials at least once a quarter, although I would love to do monthly as she recommends. Maybe next raise…

Most recently, Lena did the “Liftosome Firming” facial on me, and my skin looks radiant. During every facial she dips your hands in a paraffin wax so your digits get a little TLC as well. She is really great at explaining what everything is that she puts on you, which matters to me. She also never tries to sell any of the products, you actually have to ask if you want to buy something, which is the first time that’s ever happened.

Lena and her assistant Julia are able to customize your experience to fit your needs. The menu of services offered is extensive and I usually consult before they get started on what facial treatment I should go for. Everytime I’ve had a facial she tweaks her method based on what my skin needs and where I am going that weekend. She has a ton of offerings for men as well, so if you are looking for a place for you and your honey to get pampered, you’ve found it.

Keep in mind, this isn’t a luxury spa experience that you might get staying at The Standard or at Great Jones Spa. While there is a place and time for those types of locations (honeymoons, expense budgets, etc.) places like Lena Skincare make continual face and body maintenance attainable. Her location is easy to get to (a block from Grand Central), in a newly renovated building, inside a clean and spacious doctors office. It’s quiet, it’s private, and Lena is always running on time. I’ve never waited more than 3 minutes for her, because she and her assistant are fast and efficient and consciencious of how busy us NYers are. She uses quality Guinot products and never double dips. Best of all, you can text her to make an appointment and she’s incredibly accommodating for last minute needs.

Anyways, go see her, buy a gift card for a friend, get your rewards card started with her. I’ll be moping in the corner.
