Tucked away off Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, sits the tiniest nook of a deli, Mile End. Noah Bernamoff and Rae Cohen opened up this smoked-meat sandwhich shop in 2010, same year I moved to neighboring Cobble Hill, yet this is shamefully my first time dining there. I think I was turned off by the term ‘deli’ in the title – but it’s a deli done in an adorable Brooklyn-way, that just happens to serve the most delicious sandwiches your tastebuds dare to dream of. Now that I’ve been, I know it won’t be my last.Mile End specializes in Montreal-style Jewish comfort food. If you are as curious as I, you can read all about the renaissance of this cuisine here. They’ve been on Hoyt St for 5 years, in a converted garage and quickly started serving out hand-sliced smoked meats, bowls of soup, and decadent poutine. They opened a 2nd location in NoHo on Bond St. just 3 years ago.
We arrived just as they re-opened for dinner, and took a seat at the bar so we could watch the chefs do their thing. There are also 3 community-style picnic tables, a small set up for 2, and outside seats where you can enjoy your house-brewed espresso to go.Unlike the rough-around-the-edges staff at Katz or Eisenberg’s, the servers are pretty friendly and mostly the young-blood hipster type. That takes some getting used to if you prefer the old-school butcher mentality and atmosphere, but I think you’ll get over it as soon as the scent hits your nostrils. The smoker is out for all to see and everytime the door is opened it’s a treat. Heaven!
We were happy to see the menu – which changes weekly – was relatively small, but we still asked for recommendations on our order. We did really well, in hindsight I’d recommend someone in your party getting the burger which has ground smoked brisket in it.
As I mentioned, not getting the burger seemed to be a bit of a lapse in judgement, but we were both so full. You need a 3rd person!.The open kitchen lent us to watching their brussel sprout process. If these delectables are on the menu next time I’m there, I’ll be ordering them.
I loved every bite, and writing this while juice cleansing has been particularly painful, but I do it for my people.
